Convenient Continuing Education (CE) for Dentists

There are a host of continuing medical education (CME) courses available online, covering just about everything you need to know, and some things you don't, but are eager to discover. In fact, more likely the challenge of taking online CME for dentists is finding the time to fit it all in. The good news is that an online service allows you to take a course anytime from almost anywhere you can get internet access. The bad news is that you can take a course anytime, so weekend afternoons may not only be reserved for watching football. Read more here about these options.

Drivers

There are a few key items that will dictate the how the lineup of courses will progress:
  • State mandates - the courses needed to be taken in order to maintain your license.
  • Specialty requirements - depending on your specialty, to keep your certification there are specific requirement and hours.
  • Group practices - there are separate requirements for group practices versus individual practices.
  • Your interests - if there is a path you wish to pursue, such as public health if you are in general dentistry, you can begin those pursuits online.
These categories are not necessarily mutually exclusive so certain courses could check more than one column. The point is this is a commitment of precious time, so there is planning required. And in the case of being the leader of a group practice, this planning has to happen for your staff.

Additional Considerations

There are additional things that should be part of your online dentist CM that may not be mandates, but are important nonetheless.  Here are some of those items:
  • Social media - no one performing services for the public isn't rated. Period. So since it can't be avoided, it's much better to master it.
  • Technology - it's a keen grasp of the obvious to say new technology impacts a dental practice. But appreciate that many of your patients had x-rays developed like film, and had their fillings made of mercury composites, when growing up. Lots has changed.
  • Insurance and payment - another rapidly changing landscape where we are well beyond simply private insurance or nothing.
Given the ever evolving landscape of the practice of dentistry, keeping abreast of events is almost a daily exercise in unearthing something brand new. Requirements and interests merge for practitioners so that online CME for dentists is regularly a journey of learning and discovery.
